Treatment For Overactive Bladder

Hyperactive bladder is defined as the frequent urge to urinate. This often occurs more than 8 times in a 24 hour period and may even occur overnight. Some people with this problem report they have to get out of bed 2 or more times nightly to use the bathroom. If this is a problem for you, it is important to seek treatment for overactive bladder because the issue is not going to go away on its own. There are all kinds of different treatments available, but to determine the right one for you a diagnosis and cause must first be determined by a medical professional.

When you go for your initial appointment, your doctor will ask you questions about your urinary habits. It may help to keep a record of when you feel the urge to urinate. Often people with overactive bladder find they only produce a trickle of urine each time they go. You may be asked to measure output using a plastic cup called a hat that fits over the toilet seat and has measurement markings. Your doctor will evaluate the measurements and times you write down, which is usually done over a 24 hour period. From there more tests may or may not be performed.

Your doctor may press on the bladder to see if there is any pain there, or if any malformations are felt. In some cases imaging tests are done to get a look inside the bladder. Once a cause and diagnosis of overactive bladder is reached, treatment options can be discussed. In some cases, the cause is related to the brain and nervous system, and can be treated with antidepressants, biofeedback and behavioral therapy. Limiting liquids and modifying your diet may also help. If the problem is determined to be muscular, medications that relax the bladder muscles and provide you more control may be prescribed.

Surgery is a last resort, and is usually only recommended if all other methods have failed. Sometimes it is necessary if the problem is a tumor or bladder stones, but even in these cases there may be alternative treatments. Speaking of alternative treatments, some people turn to herbal remedies to treat overactive bladder. While you should not do this without the approval of your doctor, a few herbs that are thought to be beneficial for urinary health include pumpkin, cleavers and saw palmetto. Magnesium is a mineral that some believe may also have a positive effect on bladder health.
