Natural Remedies For Urinary Tract Infections

One of the most common conditions related to the bladder that many women suffer from at some point during their lifetime is cystitis, more commonly called a urinary tract infection. There are medications as well as natural remedies for urinary tract infections. This type of infection is usually caused by bacteria that travels from the urethra into the bladder. Women get UTIs more frequently than men do, and it is speculated this is because the length of the urethra is shorter in women.

There are various ways bacteria can reach the bladder, including the use of feminine hygiene products like douche and deodorant spray. This is why many doctors tell women not to douche, as it is normally unnecessary and may cause more harm than good. It is easy to tell if you may have a urinary tract infection, as the pain during urination is usually quite severe. There may be blood in the urine, fever, lower abdominal pain and the urge to urinate frequently with very little urine actually being voided. While there are home remedies that can be used, it is recommended you see a doctor immediately because if left untreated the bacteria can spread to other organs such as the kidneys and cause dangerous complications.

In the beginning stages of a urinary tract infection (within the first two days,) during antibiotic therapy or as a preventative measure, there are things you can do at home. One is to dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda in lukewarm water and drink it, as this will neutralize acid in the urine. Blueberry and cranberry juice help cleanse the system and have antibacterial properties which may help urinary infections from developing. Pineapple is another home remedy, which should be used together with your antibiotics. Pineapple contains bromelain, a component that may help hasten your recovery. And of course, drinking plenty of water to flush bacteria out of your system is a good idea.

Natural remedies for urinary tract infections are only recommended if the suspected infection is in its very early stages, such as the first day or two. If after two days the problem persists you should see your doctor for antibiotics. While taking antibiotics you can use the above remedies which cannot hurt, and many doctors will tell you to consume yogurt to replenish the friendly bacteria in your system that antibiotics may destroy. Home remedies for UTIs are better used as preventative measures rather than treatments, so eating pineapple and drinking lots of water and cranberry juice for example may lower your risk of developing this type of infection.
