Types Of Incontinence Medication

Incontinence is a medical problem that affects both men and women of all ages. There are many different causes of this problem. The first thing you need to do if you are experiencing urinary incontinence is see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment recommendations. In many cases your doctor may prescribe some type of incontinence medication along with possible treatments you can do at home and lifestyle changes. When combined these three things can have a positive effect on your urinary problems. It is helpful to know the different kinds of medications on the market and what they do.

Because some cases of incontinence and/or overactive bladder are caused by muscular issues such as spasms, medications called urinary antispasmodics may be prescribed. This class of drugs includes medicines like Detrol LA, Ditropan and Ditropan XL, Levsin, Anaspaz, Toviaz, Vesicare and more. Urinary antispasmodics aren't for everyone; your doctor will need to evaluate your condition to decide which medication is right for you. In some cases, certain types of antidepressants may be prescribed to treat incontinence. This is called off label use and many medical professionals practice it when they deem it is necessary.

One class of antidepressant is the tricyclic antidepressant. Elavil falls into this category. Other tricyclics include Norpramin, Pamelor and Sinequan. SNRIs may also be used. This acronym stands for Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor. These antidepressants are fairly new and quite popular for a variety of conditions including depression and incontinence. The reason antidepressants are used for urinary problems is because they target transmitters in the brain which have a direct effect on the nervous system and thus urinary function. Antidepressants are commonly used when stress or anxiety is determined to be the cause of incontinence.

frequent urination

It is impossible to know what kind of incontinence medication you need without a physical evaluation. During this process you will be consulting with either your doctor or a urologist, a specialist who handles urinary issues. You will be asked about your bathroom habits and most likely asked to measure and document when you urinate and how much over a 24 hour time frame. Various tests which may include imaging tests may be performed as well to get a clear idea of the problem. Once a diagnosis is reached your medical professional can decide which type of medication is best for you. He or she may also recommend practicing bladder control exercises and limiting liquids in addition to other exercises and/or lifestyle modifications.
