What Is Cystitis?

The condition known as cystitis is defined as inflammation of the bladder. In many cases, this medical problem stems from bacteria which causes an infection. You may hear this condition referred to as an UTI, or urinary tract infection. This can be extremely painful and potentially life threatening if left untreated because the infection can spread to other parts of the body such as the kidneys. While treatment for this condition is not difficult, it is important to seek medical attention right away to prevent complications. Because urinary tract infections are so uncomfortable, most people see their doctor right away seeking relief.

While the most common cause of this type of infection is bacteria, it may also be caused by certain medications, extended catheter use, radiation treatment or for females, the use of hygienic products like douche and feminine deodorant spray. Some spermicides may also cause urinary tract infections. In some cases, the infection is a side effect of another medical condition. The majority of cases are treated with a course of antibiotics. However it depends on the type of infection, as non-bacterial infections may be treated differently.

So how do you know if you are suffering from a urinary tract infection? The symptoms are not hard to miss. You will have an urge to urinate frequently, and burning pain during and after urination. There may be blood in the urine, which might be easily noticeable when you use the bathroom or detected via urinalysis. Abdominal pain and fever may also be present. For most people, the pain associated with urination is so intense that there is no doubt some kind of medical problem exists. If you suspect a urinary tract infection, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.

frequent urination

As previously mentioned, cystitis is usually diagnosed via urinalysis, which simply means you will urinate in a cup and your urine will be evaluated in the laboratory for infection. If the infection comes back positive, your doctor will start you on the proper antibiotics. While you are waiting on relief, try placing a hot water bottle over the lower abdomen and try pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen as recommended by your physician. To prevent urinary tract infections, there are some simple measures you can take. If you are female, avoid douching and feminine hygiene sprays as they can do more harm than good. Drinking cranberry juice and lots of water as opposed to soft drinks is recommended as cranberry juice is a natural cleanser for the urinary system.
