Recognizing Urine Infection Symptoms

Bladder infections, also known as urinary tract infections, are quite common in females. While males can get this type of infection they are less likely to do so. This may be due to the fact that women have a shorter urethra which allows bacteria to reach the bladder more easily. The majority of these infections are bacterial in nature. Recognizing bladder infections symptoms is not difficult because they are quite noticeable. If you have this type of infection you should immediately recognize something is wrong.

Symptoms of UTI infection include the urge to urinate frequently, a small trickle of urine rather than the normal amount when you go to the bathroom, lower abdominal pain, mild fever, a burning sensation during and after urination, and blood in the urine. In some cases the blood is easily seen because the urine is a rusty color, in other cases it is detected via laboratory urinalysis. You should not assume that a urinary infection will go away on its own. It is necessary to seek treatment immediately because the infection can spread to other parts of the body and if left untreated can be very dangerous.

If you have any of the above symptoms and suspect a urinary infection, see your doctor or urologist for an examination and diagnosis. You will be asked about your symptoms and will need to urinate in a cup so your urine can be tested for bacteria. The test does not take long to perform and results should be back in about 20 minutes depending on how busy the laboratory is. Usually you can have the urinalysis performed in your doctor's office without having to go to a separate lab facility. If the results come back that you do have a bladder infection, treatment will be started.

Normally treatment for urinary infection will be a simple course of antibiotics. It is important to finish all the antibiotics in the bottle, even if you feel better, because if you don't the infection can reoccur and may be worse than before. There are things you can do to prevent urinary infections, which include drinking cranberry juice, not using douche or feminine deodorant spray, and avoiding excessive soft drinks and alcohol. If you develop bladder infections symptoms, don't wait to see if the problem gets better. Make an appointment with your doctor right away because the sooner you are treated, the sooner you will feel better and the risk of complications will be minimized.
